The FdSc Leadership Principles in Health & Social Care provides a challenging, employability led curriculum relevant to the needs of the student that reflects the current and projected needs of the local Health and Social Care sector.
Students achieving the FdSc Leadership Principles in Health & Social Care will be equipped with knowledge, skills, and behaviours to make a contribution to these sectors, whilst preparing graduates to progress to Level 6 study either at OBC in collaboration with its partners or another HEI providing subject related top-up degrees, should they choose to do so.
FdSc Leadership Principles in Health & Social Care is a 2-year programme in partnership with New College Durham. There is a specific focus towards leadership, management, social sciences and reflective practices. Modules and programme design, support current sector demands and requirements and provide opportunities for students to progress into the sector or/ and to further academic studies. Anatomy, Physiology and the Exploration of Health Conditions | 20 | 1 | Mandatory | This module aims to build and develop the student’s detailed knowledge of the human body as a working organism and the interrelationship between the systems. Students will develop their understanding of the structure and development of the body, its arrangement from the workings of the cells and tissues to the organism as a whole. |

Students will gain an understanding of positive communication models and review the statutory frameworks (including safeguarding of children and adults), standards, guidance, and Codes of Practice that underpin practice, whilst promoting an inclusive and respectful environment for practitioners and service users. |

Students will develop an understanding about key and current leadership and management theories and their associated philosophies, that are utilised in the modern health and care sectors. Students will analyse essential management strategies and their application in the workplace and progress to examine and evaluate elements of effective change and risk management concepts, currently applied across the modern health and care sector. |
Exploring Sociological and Psychological Influences in HSC | 20 | 2 | Mandatory | This module is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the complex factors that shape and impact health and social care. As a vital component of this programme, students will explore sociological and psychological perspectives, two disciplines that play a crucial role in understanding various aspects of health and social care through providing valuable insights into human behaviour, social interactions, and the impact of societal structures on individuals’ well-being. |
Public Health | 20 | 2 | Mandatory | The Public Health module will develop a further understanding of evidence explored in the Exploration of Health Conditions module at level 4. It will develop the holistic idea of health that have been identified within that module and how the role of public health can prevent or reduce these concerns. The Public Health module will explore topics about preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the efforts of society. |
Transforming Health and Social Care | 20 | 2 | Mandatory | The aim of this module is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of healthcare and social service systems, with a strong emphasis on improvement strategies and their practical applications. Students will delve into the intricacies of these critical sectors, exploring their structures, functions, and the key stakeholders involved, identifying and implementing evidence-based improvement strategies to address specific problems within healthcare and social service settings, thereby enhancing the quality and efficiency of services. |

To gain entry to the programme you must satisfy the standard or non-standard entry requirements detailed below.
Applicants at level 4 who do not have English as their first language will be required to have as a minimum an IELTS overall score of 5.5 with none of the tested component scores less than 5.0 in addition to the required entry qualifications.
Entry onto all courses requires a minimum of Level B2 within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages this is equivalent to:
