The New Year represents a chance for a fresh start, especially if you want a new job. Now is the ideal time to sit down and design your career blueprint.
What is a career blueprint? Your blueprint is a model of what you want to achieve in your working life. It’s your personal plan, showing the career you want, and how you can work towards it.
Here are four steps you can take to start designing your career blueprint for 2021.
1) List your goals
What do you want to do? For some, this is an easy question to answer, but for others it can take a bit of thought. To help, write down a list of your goals in life. Do you want to be your own boss? Do you want to work part time or full time? Do you want a career in a particular sector or industry?
Split your list into three categories. One is the type of job you want (e.g., marketing or sales), another is the level of job you want (e.g., employee or manager), and the last is the type of industry you want to work in.
Then, combine your list to create different career options. Your list will reveal what you’re passionate about, what industries to consider, and what type of job fits your profile.
2) Rank your career options
The next stage of your blueprint is to rank your career preferences. You may have listed more than one career, but it’s important to know the order in which you’d prefer each option. Know the difference between your dream job, and jobs you’d simply be happy working in.
3) Review your skills
Next, look at the skills you currently have, and compare them to the skills required to work in your dream job.
Ask yourself, do you have the skills to do your dream job? If not, what skills do you need to obtain? Look at job listings and industry websites in your chosen field to find out what kind of skills are required. When you’ve understood what skills you need, go to step 4 …
4) Decide how to upskill
Upskilling is common in business; it’s how we learn the skills to develop in our working life. Once you know the skills you need for your chosen career, you can decide how to obtain them.
Some skills can be acquired through self-learning, while others might be accessible through practical training. Many will need formal qualifications, like a degree or a professionally recognised course.
A degree is also a valuable asset on your resume, officially underlining what you’ve learnt to prospective employers. If you need to select a College or University to study with, use a service like WhatUni to help match you with a course – go to https://www.whatuni.com.

Step four is one of the most important parts of your blueprint. Education is essential in business, and once you’ve designed your ideal career, learning is the key to putting your plan into action.
One course worth considering for a variety of careers is a business management course. Business management courses teach a wide range of skills, offer valuable insights into running a business, and provide a strong, practical underpinning to any career.
