The course refines skills in strategy and research across disciplines of creative business practices such as marketing and management.

BA (Hons) Business Innovation and Management (Top-up) course awarded by University for Creative Arts, is final year of a UK undergraduate degree course. It enables students to progress and develop skills and knowledge expected of business undergraduate.
The model of learning is problem-based and real-world which provides the requisite knowledge and understanding of enterprises and the business environment, at both the macro and micro level in which they operate. It helps develop a range of cognitive and intellectual skills together with competencies specific to enterprises in the creative industries, enabling students to succeed in diverse business environments or to pursue postgraduate study.
This course enables students to develop an understanding of business strategy, marketing, strategic planning, and the critical awareness which global businesses demand, with the specific knowledge which is applied for business innovation and management. Students will also be able to provide a proposal for a research topic, which will be conducted over the whole academic year informing and contributing towards final business project.
Under this course, student also study enterprise, sustainability, and business ethics as well as entrepreneurship and creativity.

In order to succeed as a business, you need to implement an effective business strategy. Your strategy clearly defines where you are heading in order to generate a clear cohesive path within your business to achieve aligned strategic aims and objectives. You will learn, in this unit, to develop knowledge and understanding of the terminology of strategy and its relevance to strategic decision making in organisations. You will learn the fundamental decisions made in the field of strategy covering three strategic dimensions i.e. strategy process, strategy content and strategy context. The unit is concerned with managerial decisions and actions that affect the performance and survival of business enterprises.
You will identify which managerial decisions and actions affect the performance and survival of business enterprises. Once you have focused on the information, organisational processes and business judgement managers must use to devise strategies, you will then consider how you position your own business, define firm boundaries and maximise long-term profits in the face of uncertainty and competition.
The purpose of business research is to inform action that with help businesses succeed. Research can be carried out on different aspects of any sector or individual businesses. It may include relationships with customers, staff and other stakeholders, operations, sales, trends, budget allocations, new and emerging opportunities and potential risks.
This unit aims to develop your skills of independent enquiry and critical analysis by developing a research proposal that is of direct relevance to the course you are studying and your professional development. The proposal needs to form a feasible basis for the final business project that you will need to submit at the end of the course. You will be expected to address the elements that make up formal research including research proposal questions, literature review, research methodologies, and action planning. You will identify with how to develop a creative idea for business research and understand how to manage and present all the elements of your proposal in preparation for the final business project.
The ‘strategy’ is what you want to achieve, and the ‘plan’ is how you are going to do it. In this unit you will learn capturing and creating customer value at strategic level. You will gain fundamental understanding of marketing concepts and insights in differentiating the role of a marketing manager in domestic and international marketing decision making (Global Marketing), as well as the practical knowledge and skills of the marketing process. This level 6 unit supports the course philosophy of integration of practice and academic theory, and will enable you to become a critical and creative marketing manager that has the understanding and skills needed to deliver innovative marketing strategies and ideas now, and for the future.
You will be able to evaluate the business environment at both macro and micro level, applying a number of marketing models, and explore the relationships between strategy and marketing. In addition, you will be able to critically evaluate marketing strategy performance and make recommendations by implementing and managing a marketing plan.
Ethical behaviour and corporate social responsibility can bring significant benefits to a business and as sustainability now forms part of the everyday consciousness of the consumer its presence will be permanent. We will present you with a case study in which you will explore the concept of business ethics and develop your abilities to examine its relevance when considering business objectives and responsibilities. Enterprise sustainability is concerned with the impact of business activities on the business environment; whilst business ethics embraces corporate social responsibility and ethics relating to accounting practices, marketing, human resource management and production. It also provides you opportunities to review international standards for corporate responsibility and accountability. By the end of this unit you should be able to present your understanding of business objectives from an ethical perspective and your response to ethical issues within an international context.
Combining Entrepreneurship with Creativity will allow you to generate and recognise innovative business concepts, generate solutions, alternatives and possibilities with the chance of organising and managing your own business venture.
This unit provides an overall insight into entrepreneurship and the creative approaches to the study of entrepreneurship. You will investigate the factors, which underpin successful entrepreneurship activities for small and medium sized organisations. You will also explore issues related to individuals and the entrepreneurial mind-set. You will be exposed to the processes of creativity and innovation, major types of innovation, methods to initiate new ventures, the relationships between creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as strategic planning for entrepreneurial initiatives.
Your Final Business Project allows you to develop your skillset of independent enquiry enabling you to undertake a sustained research investigation of direct relevance to your area of interest and professional development. This unit is linked directly to the Business Research unit.
Building on the business research proposal, this unit enables you to deliver a final business project based on your creative research. Not only will you be able to utilise your ability to use research techniques and methods, you will also be able to demonstrate your synthesis skills using a range of approaches to develop integrated scenarios and synergic effects for better understanding of the problem probed by identifying the interdependencies and cross-impacts of various factors considered in your study. You will also demonstrate your creative skills to draw inferences and innovative strategies from the results of the analysis of the data collected with professional insights and a clear set of recommendations that provide answers to your initial research questions and objectives.
Teaching and Assessment
Our approach to learning, teaching and assessment seeks to develop the skills and attributes you require when working in a professional business environment, and to be able to demonstrate your professionalism.
The delivery of the course consists of lectures, seminars, supported tutorials and independent learning. Guided learning will be used for Business Research and the Final Business Project, which aims to support students through tasks designed to develop skills and understanding, and to promote communication, responsibility, and appropriate decision-making.
Oxford Business College will provide each student with access to a virtual learning environment or VLE (Moodle) to engage with course content. Units will require students to prepare for, participate in and further develop skills explored.
Two of the characteristics that employers want from you are the “soft skills” acquired through interacting effectively in groups, and the ability to work independently. This profile of teaching and learning strategies therefore prepares you for the world of work by inculcating these transferable skills. Where required, and where possible, learning and teaching can be adapted to the specific needs of the student, through the adaptation of teaching materials as well as support from College staff.
The assessment strategy for the BA (Hons) Business Innovation and Management (Top up) is concerned with the student’s development through knowledge, understanding and application of a range of technical and professional skills in the development of this knowledge. In order to make this relationship clear, learning outcomes are mapped against assessment criteria in each unit descriptor.Variety of assessments including written assignments, presentations, research proposal, and a final business project allow for diversity of assessment methodology.
